I took the Broadway local north to 50th st and kept remembering the fabulous and mysterious shops on the floors above the street. The custome store I never dared go into. gone. I headed west towards Arthur's apartment, looking up as I walked and there it was LIVE BEAUTIFUL MODELS.

The man in the adult store said they had closed 2 years ago but the photos lked like from the 1980s.

I'm giving over, for an exhibition at Participant Inc, two of my photos from the early 80's of the artist Greer Lankton.

2 days ago i met up with Camilla whom i hadn't seen since b4 she moved back to Denmarck and had five children with her husband, Greg.

I received the following emails:

Dear Mr Kroll,
Could you please settle an argument by confirming that you photographed Madonna in 1983 in New York. The photographs that I believe you shot are being attributed to another photographer so would be grateful if you could help.

(my reply) i shot her with corn rows in the basement of danceteria. could have been 83. thanks. curious. what other photog is claiming them. peace

Thank you for responding so promptly. It's not another photographer who's claiming them but a Madonna fan page on Facebook. I told them it was you but they are insisting it is Oliviero Toscani. So thank you for the confirmation. They were some great shots by the way.

(my thoughts) If one lives long enough one gets to see an appreciation (but most likely no money) for what one shot on an everyday basis 30 years ago.

I also was tracked down by Greer Lankton's husband to contribute some photos I did of her also in the 1980s for an exhibnition at the Participant Gallery on east Houston. The previous show was on Cookie Mueller so I feel in good company.

Sometimes sexuality is subtle...sometimes it isn't. Melanie decided to cook fish on Friday after she, Charlie and I went to the American Museum of Natural History. I had been in and out of trying to meet up with Dr. Jonathan. I invited him for dinner. Melanie suggested inviting Megan. She said her model/photographer girlfriend was now a sailor for ships. I bought the Suaza tequila. I wanted/hoped that Melanie would take Dr. Jonathan's portrait. Below are two of the b&w medium format shots she had done of Arthur when we went to visit him. Maybe she would do another portrait?

I've known the doctor since he bought a Betty Page print from me over twenty years ago. He then lived 2 blocks north of my Park Avenue studio. I've known Melanie since she called 10 years ago and suggested we do a shoot.  We have shot many times a year since then. I began to notice-as the ladies got higher on tequila -a different way of assisting and passing of the camera.

it made me think of study hall in Ward Manor at Bard College in 1964. right?

Melanie and I independently picked up on the `Blow Up' vibe that was transpiring in her living room.

Melanie has never given ME that expression! Was this b4 or after they began playing "patty cake Patty cake"?

how come my photos don't lk like this?

I realized it was time for Dr. Jonathan and I to leave. My next shoot, starting at 10 pm, happened to be 4 doors down from where Jonathan lived!

Should I be Paranoid when Sheriff Joyce #7727 of the Pima County Sheriff's department approaches me minutes ago

while I am eating my veggie dinner in the corner table of the Whole Foods on Craycroft and River and asks me if I saw someone run through the area. There had been a theft from Whole Foods.
I had arrived at 9 pm and bought my dinner from the trays and sat down to answer my emails because I choose to have no internet at home. The area I was in was diserted and I had seen no one running or walking. He wanted my name, my address and then he wanted my phone number. Sheriff Joyce hadn't asked me when I arrived or anything. His police car was outside where I was sitting so it seemed legit but why my number. I told him I wasn't giving him my number.
He went away and came back shortly thereafter saying there had been a report of someone sitting where I was looking at child pornography on the 24th. I was sitting with my back to the wall. I told him I was in NYC visiting my children. I asked him who reported this and he said a customer. He said I fit the customer's description. There is no way any customer to see what anyone was doing on their computer in my corner. the person working in the coffee area bend the wall could peer over and see what someone was doing in my corner but no customer. How did this "customer" know it was child pornography. wow. arizona!
I left Whole Foods (north east corner of Craycroft and River) at closing time and called Gail. I mentioned how I wanted to find out if Officer Joyce had the rights to ask for my info though I saw nothing. I mentioned I would find out tomorrow then realized I could propobably find out tonight.  I called the number on the card and the machine said no one was there but I should call 911. I did and explained it wasn't an emergency but I'd like to speak to someone in charge at the Pima County Sheriff's office. The operator asked for my phone number and I was uptight enough not to want to give it so she proposed I meet the Sheriff somewhere and I was going to Kinkos but she said that was out of his jurisdiction. She suggested I wait in front of Whole Foods.
After a bit a sherrif vehicle drove up in front of whole foods and I approached and he told me to wait at my car and he went into Whole Foods. I could see he was talking to the long haired fellow that was in charge when I was in there. Was I the topic of their conversation?
Finally,  Sheriff Donovan came out and walked over to me as more police officer vehicles arrived. He asked why he had been called and I explained what had happened. He was flustered and had a hard time understanding what had happened to me. He thought maybe the child porn accusation had been for today- no officer it was Oct. 24th. He explained that what Joyce had asked for was normal procedure. Meanwhile a shorter officer had his flash lite out and was checking my vehicle (for what?). Then they pointed out that I was trespassing on private property until I pointed out that the police operator had told me to wait where I was for Donovan.
Donovan, as an aside, said that the long haired manager guy and told him to tell me I was no longer welcome in Whole Foods and I could not come back. The little short fellow officer piped up that he was a witness to what Donovan was telling me and that I had been warned. I asked Donovan the man's name that had told him I couldn't come back but he hadn't noted his name. wow.
I will call the head cheese at Whole Foods tomorrow to find out why I am banned. Arizona ridiculous rides again!
As I was driving home the phone rang and it was unidentified. It turned out to be Joyce's superior officer. He asked me questions and I answered them. He said that it was procedure for Joyce to ask for my info but I didn't have to give it. So much for not giving out my telephone number. The authorities have everything. I'm surprised I didn't make a contribution to the police force without knowing it. They must have my bank account info!
The next morning-this morning -I continue to think about it. Was I blocked from Whole Foods because the management thought I was hanging around ready to cause trouble. They didn't know that the police nite operator had told me to wait there for officer Donovan. Its like the fable- the outlaws are in black (I was wearing a black t-shirt and black pants) and a good guys wear white. Or the twilight zone episode where there is an officer in plain clothes escorting a prisoner in plain clothes and the audience and the community in the episode have to decide which is which. They assume the ugly one is the outlaw and the handsome one is the law enforcement. WRONG.

in rm 103 of the Motel 6 I was staying in off Interstate 10 around 9:30 pm last night.

But I  want to write/show my birthday party last Oct. 23rd at Leah and Bradley's Brooklyn loft with the help of Willa and Lucas. Adrianna came. My nephew Andrew brought from below the George Washington bridge his baby baby daughter Simone Rose without Larissa, the mom. He came at nite by subway and left the same way after 10 pm and he's a working lawyer. Now that's a family man of the highest order. Rayna and her husband, Rino, came. I hadn't seen but helped raise Rayna since San Francisco on Bush st. red is the perfect color for Rayna.

After I graduated from college in 1969 and moved to Taos, NM and then to NYC in 1971 it took about 3 years to get a spectacular loft on w. 29th st above the Old Garden (German) restaurant in Manhattan. One day a female friend from Bard College came by having just returned from living in Laos. She remained a high cheeked beauty and she told me she needed a job and I got her a job with my photo stock agency that I sold my work through. They hired her and gave her keys to the office. She came over after work the nbext week and after she left I went looking for my camera and it was gone. I looked everywhere. Finally I called another friend from Bard and mentioned I couldn't find my camera and the last person that had visited was H. He remarked that she had come back from Laos a junkie! Telling my agency to change their locks was a drag. Fast forward forty years and another friend from Bard sent me an article in the New York Post about a grandmother purse thief that at age 68 had been arrested and put into jail. She had been arrested multiple times. After she came out of jail she died the next day! It was the same person I had known at Bard college. I can't believe she remained a junkie all these years. Maybe she had some klepto problems.

I've been in love (with him and his music) Naim Amor since I met him at Amy Reed's house at a jam session years ago. and I fell crazy for the music and personality of Al Foul. I heard them for the second time recently at the Maker House. Beautiful Katy awful was my date. She told me she used to hear Al when she was 12 years old! Lucky lady.

Katy and I then drove all nite to Colorado and I bought some legal pot and I smoked it but didn't inhale and Katy didn't smoke any.

I am disappointed to write that Roberto Francisco Villa,  and dad to my close friend Robert Villa, violinist and reptile (turtle) and plant guy died last week at age 50 of cardiac arrest.

I met Roberto only a few times but I remember those times- he cooking a pot of something delicious in his kitchen, we eating with his other boy in a restaurant along 6th avenue and a chinese restaurant along St. Mary's and at a Heather Gray documentary on a Spanish bakery where the above photo was taken. I keep telling my girl kids how every moment together is a precious one for me...and for them.

My close friend Dave Naz married to my close friend Ori Small had an exhibition in Chinatown in LA and a book launching at the gallery.  The book, Genderqueer and other Gender Identities is published by Rare Bird Books and available on Amazon and at their website rare books.com. The exhibition is at Coagula Curatorial 974 Chung King Rd in Chinatown LA. Nov. 8th to Dec. 20, 2014.

Robert Wilson on the Beach

I shot Robert Wilson's rehearsals for "Einsten On the Beach" and this time, the strongest wqork I saw at Miami Art Basel was his "portraits" of Lady Gaga in image boxes where he added subtle movement in the image and his signature music.

The main pavillion had the Warhol's

and the Annie Leibovitz work of what's her name

and the David Hockney rooms

and John Chamberlain

and Alexander Calder's stay mobile in the foreground

and Mike Kelley who I have been wrong about consistantly.  Years ago I had dinner with him. We were guests of Benedikt Taschen and afterwards I mentioned how I thought he was aragant plus boring. Then I saw his sock monkeys and loved them. Then we had a big public verbal fight at a Pierre Davis talk and then I saw his Gagosian yearbook recreation exhibit and loved it. Benedikt published an anthology of "Sex To Sexty" magazine and at first I thought the mag lame but then I started to dig it and buy it. Turns out Benedikt learned of Sexty to Sexty from Mike Kelley. I'm ceertain I will be wrong again.

But the most important move I made at Art Basel was when I turned the corner and saw the color photo of Mike Bildo and David Wajnarovich sitting on the grass on the second floor of the Canal Pier.

That's when i met Penny Pilkington, owner of PPOW gallery which I remembered from the lower eastside art movement in the 1980's. I told her I also had fine photos of David and the pier and she told me about the upcoming David Wajnorich retrospective at the Whitney museum. As soon as I got back to my north Miami beach apartment provided by my brilliant writer friend Javier de Pison, I sent these images below and more.

My artist/performer long time friend Willard Morgan of Idealglass gallery in NYC has been creating personas for decades (Jelvis, the Jewish Elvis i.e.). Black Highwaymen and the sons of Black Highwaymen

$

I go down to North Miami beach to the sun but also to follow the lead of my friend/writer Javier de Pison who I have been friends with since he had the Wild Seduction gallery and was married to Peli and I was with Felice. We try and know the old sites of Florida- Weeki Wachi, the underwater phitographer Bruce Mozert and this time the Black Highwaymen that began in the sixties along A1A in Ft. Pierce, Fla. I'm going to gert the facts wrong and will try and correct the txt at a later date.
It seems NOT COLLEGE EDUCATED Black men painted Florida landscapes and sold them up and down the state road.
My new writer friend photographer/writer Gary Monroe who teaches in Daytona and wrote the definitive book on the work of Bruce Mozert also wrote numberous books published through the University of Florida Press on the Highway Men painters.
We were due in Ocala the next day but stopped at Ft. Pierce and found the A.C. Backus museum.

Seems Backus, the talented and successful Florida landscape painter, went to the local high school in Ft. Pierce and asked to teach the most talented Black young artist they had.

Al Hair, born 1941, came and studied with Backus. Soon he was doing landscapes from his memory (not from photos) and linked up with Al Black who sold them to businessmen along A1A and out of his truck. Things were going well- hoping to make many canvas to make much money he learned to paint on jetson board (drywall board). He had an assembly line of canvases and produced 20 paintings a day. Other young Blacks came around and Hair and the 26 original Highway men would paint in his backyard, go out and catch fish and drink and eat while painting and sell them in South Florida.
Then sitting in Eddie's drive-in along Avenue D in Ft. Pierce, he was gunned down and the art movement went quite until the late nineties. There is a oblique down the street from where he was killed as a tribute to his talent as an artist.

I always encourage my kids to ask people questions. When we couldn't find the Backus museum, Javier asked Derrick, who turned out to be working for the city of Ft. Pierce and was the nephew of Al Hair's wife, where Backus gallery was and later he walked back up to us and offered to introduce his aunt over the phone. That lead to an home interview and more.

A play on Brancusi's wonderful simplicity in his sculptures. I have been thinking about the colored sand pieces sold along route 66 that maybe I saw or imagined. In any case I have been collecting sand all over the lower west USA and storing in bags , jars and more. I made my first two several days ago. They are a reference to Mike Kelley and a piece he did around a `found' 1950s yearbook- recreating the scenes in the yearbook as tableaux at a Gagosian space in NYC a number of years ago. these two are entitled "When I was 12 or 13 I went out west" #1,#2.

My good friend, photographer, publisher and collector Jim Camp came by the house and I happened to be at the far end of my living room. He took a pic of me and later said what he said.

Over a year ago my oldest daughter Leah came for a day visit and when I brought her to my house and said again that all this stuff was going to be hers and her sister, Willa, she walked in the front door, burst into tears and left. She must have given a negative report because an old friend stopped communicating with me. Humm.
I edit from the floor up. I have a theory and I am putting it into practise.
I live alone.

my living room a number of years ago before my saguaro I placed in the middle of my livingroom broke its water. I want to view everything I own fromyears back to yesterday. If it gets on the wall it is safe. Otherwise negatives, books, clothes are on the floor and if I notice them and realize I want to live wiht it I put it on my wall. I work from chaos. My house is a a series of tzunamis meeting at different distances from my front door. I get my excercise by avoiding things on the floor and the composition changes daily!!!
