If Brandon Arnovich is the most highly evolved person I know then Steve Romanello is the nicest kindiest person I know

Steve on the left, Gibb Windahl, me

I sat with Steve last night next to his pool at a party he was throwing at his house . But it wasn't his party it was Paul and Muriel 25th anniversary party at his house. The usual suspects were there and I realized I'd missed his smile and the way he barrels from place to place. It's not that we have daughter Leahs or that I owe him for the last several weeks a hundred. He's almost my age and he has a job! He teaches post production- he wrote one of THE books on adobe photo shop. His significant other, Karen
Brannon likes me but is NOT fond of my work.
Steve also paints besides entertaining and teaching. He knows everyone and...is the kindest nicest person.

What's Happening

Come On Out To The Old Ballgame

I sent out a massive local Tucson email saying "I don't have a life. I can play softball." Three friends showed up and one of the, Allon, I had known less than a week! I heard every excuse from "i don't play sports"...to I'm cl;osing my business permanently and have to get out of my space."
We four had a grand time and as I always told my girl kids...you got to have memories.
Robert Villa played outfield and violin and when up to bat...hit every note.

Bob Campbell played his daughter in New Jersey and she seemed to like what he pitched cross country.

Allon, my new friend, hit one out of the ballpark and ended up in the duck pond, almost hitting a tur-tle.

Allon lives here and there and after the game went there...without saying good-bye. Most be a Canadian thing which he is half of.

This is what my dad looked like when he played softball in East Hampton Long Island in the 1970s. Plimpton would pitch for the Writers and Larry Rivers would hit for the Painters and one time I shot a photo of Eugene McCarthy (must have been his '72 run for Presidential nomination) fielding as ball that I sold to Time magazine.

Like my dad he and I stunk at softball but liked to play.

Allon follows the flight of my `massive' hit.

Bob Campbell so obviously on the Writer's team.

Allon and Bob warming up in the adobe dugout.

Of course Boston Tim Fuller showed up after the 7th inning, settling on dinner as his activity.

I took it down.
Reminds me of a phone call I got twenty years ago from Ingrid Sishy, then editor of Interview magazine. Glenn O'Brien (an acquaintance) wanted to use a frontal nude photo of me and William , one of Mapplethorpe's well hung Black models, who has since died. He and I are holding hands and below our photo is written "Destroying Myths". Sishy began by saying this wasn't a racist action but the printers refused to print my photo. "Please don't think this has anything to do with racism."
Right.
I removed from my blog the photo of my friend's daughter. People are UPTIGHT in this town. I've been banned from a friend's house by his wife ( a friend of 12 years plus) because she feels I broke an unspoken rule not to photograph her daughter. (her daughter is 26 or 27 yrs old). Who needs enemies with friends like this

Game Two soft ball

To get people to break away for some good old softball is almost impossible. My violinist Robert went back to preparing plants to sell for his boss instead of bringing his boss to play.  Allon, my new `travellor' friend travelled to somewhere else BUT Tim Fuller, Bob Campbell and Eric Kroll came to Ft. Lowell on this past Thursday at 5 pm and though we lost the two baseball diamonds to 6 yr olds and was fine because Tim knew a complex scoring system. ie. a ball past the picther was worth 2 points etc.
Round Robin with each person batting, pitching and fielding. I was brilliant the first round and outscored all others and then my energy disapaded and Tim and Bob battled for title. I think Tim aka Charly Hustle took home the trophy.

the opposition

pl note I live at the base of those blue Cezanne mountains

after a brief rest to check the baseball game between Boston (Tim's team) and the Yankees (Bob's team)

the serious competition began with choosing who went to bat first (not who had the bigger bat).

Tim counting his points from the batter's box

Tim counting up my points from the field

note the ball in the air. As the game moed along Bob got stronger as a pitcher, which I like.

Tim and I had the same upbringing. We grew up competitive. I love to compete and have no problem when Tim beats the pants off me (figuratively).

Of course it doesn't hurt that he is able to play all three positions (hitting, fielding, pitching) at the same time.

NOTE: game three is April 17th. we meet in the Ft. Lowell parking lot at 5 pm. Come as you r. I have the balls, the bat and all the gloves a team will need. Email me. This is for fun and excercise. Women of all ages are welcome. kroll@well.com

Gail had NEVER swung a bat. she is a natural hitter. Anyone would want her on their team

Gail uses a abllet ball stance she learned in Forest Hills Queens (it does look English)

I felt the pitcher was showing favortism. He never pitched to me that way.

Gail wore a handsome (reversible) uniform

Perhaps she wore this to distract the catcher but there was no catcher but then again there was no pitcher (note Bob, the pitcher, leaving the field). It was that kind of game.

There is nothing more attractive than abeauty in right field. Reminds me of when me and Nash Glynn (who died in Tucson Dec. 2000) were up fly fishing in Wyoming dreaming of a beauty in a pair weightors and little else besides her rod.

Bob played with a revengence as he always does

Charlie I have known since b4 his time. Yesterday, we visited the Central Park zoo. It hasn't changed a bit.

Only I have

I would have wanted to stay in his world- to see the world as he saw it but I had to go back to my world- subways, sirens and appointments with daughters and newly hatched daughter's of nephews and...

but b4 we (Charlie, Melanie and me) camped in Yosemite,

cooked at Mono Lake

visited with the very fine photographer Chrles Gatewood in San Francisco

The photo Charles Gatewood is holding is his shot of Lonnie Young crossing his downtown room with gun. Lonnie and I went to Bard College for a while. I don't think the girl did. I heard Lonnie died shortly after this photo. Sorry Lonnie.

Melanie the mom is starting a program to get her phd in philosophy. No surprise there. Here she is juggling child, modelling and photography.

I stay at my old friend Willard Morgan's hotel, the Larchmont on 11th st between 5th and 6th avenue. The bathrooms are in the hall and my door is opened with a key. Can you imagine!
Down the block is the French Roast and every morning I would have a breakfast meeting with like Stephen Kasher from the Kasher Gallery or Myles from Ampersand Gallery or luch with Carl from Bard College (1964-66).

I'd have the omelette, with bagette and chicken sausage ($8.50) and killer coffee.

I like to eat at Spain and have eaten there on and off for more than 40 years. They set up three tables in the middle of the back room and friends staggered in from 7pm to 11 pm. The free appetizers are scary but the main courses are very fine.

Leonard Abrahms, publisher of the East Village Eye, called because aJapanese t-shirt company is going to do tees of one of my covers I did for him of Robert Maplethorpe. He brought a pretty woman he was seeing. We both wore traditional Spanish shirts.

Leonard is holding a copy of the new book done of my collection of photos by John K, "Sitting". My text, Carey's design and published by Ampersand Books. It did very well at the New York City Outsider Art Show in the former DIA building lit by Dan Flavin neon pieces in the hallways.

They showed cut out collages from the 50's by Arthur, film he made in Washington Square Park and Coney Island beach in the early '60's, and photos by John I found in LA.

When photographer Melanie came to my hotel room I asked to to pick from a pile of my 4x6 inch prints and the one she choose matched in subject a photo by John. My shot had Simone Cross jamming her foot into Brandon's mouth in resonse to him asking her to drown him (at the Majestic Hotel in SF in 2003).

Who says Tucson don't got cool shit in their thrift stores. This fab hat I found at the white elephant (I think that was the name); the dress came from 22nd st. thrift east of Craycroft.

The death of my 15 inch Mac happened on my way to an abandoned "Africa USA" north of Miami where Bunny Yeager shot Betty Page with two cheetahs. I had just attended Bunny's funeral but that's another entry (soon). Sarasota was great with Charlie and Melanie and Brad McCortney's exhibition of Sarasota County portraits. Miami was fabulous with Javier dePison. He took me to Opa Locka (amazing). I spent time with 97 yr old Bruce Mozert, the great underwater photographer, who did the stills for "Creature From the Black Lagoon".
Santa fe was Santa fe where I got to see my college roomate's exhibition of fine paintings-Bob Richardson and attended Willie Bo's 40th birthday in his new studio then wandered through the desert stopping in Milan, N.M and Holbrook, Arizona. Then a quick trip to LA to meet with Myles from Ampersand Gallery to acquire more outsider art and to dine with Cynthia Patterson and Andy, Dave Naz and Ori in Eagle's Nest.

THE best Chinese food in Tucson is Old Peking restaurant. They have a Szechuan menu beyond the regular menu that is traditional and fabulous.

This is my young old friend Elia Katz, son of Leon Katz. I have discussed and argued with this New Yorker since we met in Taos, NM in 1970 through (dearly) departed Alan Kaplan. Elia is the author of "Armed Love" (Alan did the cover) a New York Times best seller about communes in the late '60's. His mind is rich even if he isn't (yet). I keep hoping he is writing secretly because the way he thinks. Could he be paralyzed by the Iching.  When I was shooting continuously in Silver Lake after I got fired from TASCHEN- mostly modelmayhem models and Elia would come over to assist and enjoy the experience. One day he showed up with a finished video (cd) he had done on my work. Its rough and available on the internet. So maybe he is writing the great American novel. I enjoyed, from a more recent novel, his account of Jesus visiting the protagonist in the Bronx at nite and becomes visble when JC goes to the icebox and opens the door. Jesus lit by the icebox-an image I'll not soon forget.

I went suddenly to LA to get more John K photos ("Sitting")

(my collection of John K photos published by Ampersand Gallery in Portland, Oregon, txt by me).
Here Myles (owner of Ampersand) walking with Maggie. My friend is Jim Camp is carrying the bat to fend off vicious dogs. East Beverly Blvd. Not B. Hills. Jim shoot porn and makes art (triple polaroid portraits)

We slept the nite before on the beds of the different porn sets. Jim is a big collector of the same swag I collect and Myles deals so we had fun talking and looking. In the morning Marley Mathews showed up. She had a list of acts she was to perform for the camera but had a sore throat and didn't want to swallow and Jim told her they don't want that anyway. The "male talent" was going to cum on her face and she remarked she liked that.

It isn't an open set so we left to look at more John  K photos.

The Power of Photography

I have stopped fights with threatening to take a photo of what was happening. My camera has contributed to heightening the eroticism between two lovers but for the first time I changed the hiring policy. Years past the women working at my gatehouse were uniformly young...not so the men. About a year ago I asked a new employee girl if I could take her photo-there at the gate. It so disturbed her she went to management complaining. Tme passed and she bleached her hair and again I asked to takew her portrait. Next thing I know the vice squad is visiting my house and she is trying to place a restrining order on me(!). THEN the gatehouse transforms. Now only women over 40 years and older. The power of the camera!

The Truth About Me and Betty Page

My good friend Steve Diet Goedde found this quiz on the internet and sent it to me.

It amazes me that this finally came out. When I was three years old (1949), my family lived in Thornwood, NY (north of NYC by an hour) and our babysitter was a woman named Betty. I remember waking up so as to (secretly) watch Boris Karloff in the "Mummy" on television. I was wearing my fire engine red onezy and passed by the above scene and Betty asked if I would take her photo with her brownie camera of herself and her friend and NEVER to tell my folks. Well...both my parents have passed away so I feel safe finally telling the truth!

Travels With Carls bad and the Fat Bastard (me)

Carl and I went to Bard College at the same time. I remember he chose to exhibit his `moderation' presentation paintings on the walls of the Stone Row dormitories' basement bathroom walls. The concept was brilliant and, as expected, he was NOT invited to the upper school.  Carl moved onto San Francisco State to get his degree and we remained friends. For decades we both lived in NYC and once, (circa 1972) I took beautiful redhead Soozie McMeans to visit Carl when he was living in Miles Davis' building on the upper westside. He wasn't there. Miles had broken his nose over a rent dispute and Carl was in the emergency room. Miles Davis took one look at Soozie and invited us into his home. Then there was the drive to Pittsburgh on acid to attend the making of George Romero's "Dawn of the Dead". (1978) Carl acted and was gouled by Tom Savini, the great make-up artist. I watched and took polaroids. Now days I often stayed in his Harlem apartment and made plans to go camping
in Sego Canyon, east of Green River, Utah.
Carl didn't have a good time. I did until Carl got SO angry, he stopped talking to me. But good came out of it. Until our foreshortened journey, Carl had stopped making images. (He was on stage at Woodstock (1969) making video). Carl brought an ibook and after seeing his shots I asked him to take various (brilliant) shots of me. After aborting the trip, Carl sent me the below story board. Also brilliant I feel. He neglected to mention that I found him his room at the Claredon Hotel Phoenix that he did love. When we pulled up at the Hotel he got out and said "This is it! We're done. Good luck and goodbye!" and walked out of my life or so I thought. After sending me his interpretation of our trip he then wrote me an angry email for giving out his phone number to another Bardguy who asked for contact info.  I seem to be losing more old "friends" than suspicious moles I get removed. Let's see- Peter, William, Ron, Ralph and now Carl. There must be more.

I should have known we were on different pages when I sent him links to images and articles on where we were going in Utah and his only respnse was to say, knowing I didn't have a printer, he would print out the info. I smoke pot but I don't go out of my way for it. The only time I saw Carl get excited was when we were walking into the Green Dragon legal pot place in Glendale Springs, Colorado.
Basically, for me, the journey is the destination. Not so Carl. What he didn't realize is that "work" and "play" are the same things in my life. Anyone that I noticed I'd want to photograph. Within the first hour of his arrival, I approached a beauty outside the Circle K and asked to shoot her. It was Carl that pointed out the gluck hanging from her boyfriend's side.

In the old days women hung around photographer's that did good to great shots of them, now tattoo artists get to fill that role.

Carl smoked more than I did all day BUT we were in the desert in the southwest among the Navaho elders and I was happy. We camped in Devil's Canyon above Monticello and stayed in a two bedroom
accomadation at the Blanding Trading Post down the road from Monument Valley. Carl kept taking fine photos of the Fat Bastard (me).

We intended to camp in Sego Canyon with the petroglyphs but the light was shitty and we camped instead in Devil's Canyon above Montecello, Utah among the juniper. My Tucson friend Carl Hanni lent me his tent but Carl S used it and I slept under the stars on a constructed cot.

I have been collecting sand from many different locations all over the southwest to make multilayers
sand jars I remember seeing as a kid. Here I go after a jar of sand north of the Four Corners.

We went to Grand Junction, Colorado intending to buy legal pot but the townspeople had voted to not allow dispensaries. At the local Starbucks I met David who sold me vintage girlie slides of Dian Weber, Lorraine Burnett and B. Page. He also advised not to go to Keluride but drive north to Glenwood Springs to the Green Dragon pot

dispensary.
After buying delicious (sateva) pot of two different grades (Carl treated me) I realized my god daughter Zoe Stern might be nearby, teaching in Aspen. She was and so was my sister Lisa!

After we drove to Rifle, Colorado

where I had spent considerable time with my then wife Lynka in 1980. The hotel we were staying had fancy cars belonging to other pot buyers. We sat and lit up.

Very mild on my lungs.
While having excellent Chinese dinner near the motel, two prom girls came by!!!!

I shot them and then went outside and next door was the place they sold the prom dresses with Missy Piggy masks over each dress.

The next day we breakfasted at the local spot. I think Carl was getting tired of me shooting but it wets my appetite. I can't tell which was more anxious to move along Carl of the mountain loin.

He crossed the double yellow line and passed my car with ease and then the suv appeared coming the other way on the s curve and he had to adjust his zoom and cut between me and the oncoming car and I thought he had made it but he hugged the bike lane, lost his balance, and hit a metal 35 mph speed limit sign going 45 mph I estimate. His body got tangled in the speed limit sign, his motorcycle and dreams kept going another 50 feet. By the time I stopped my car and went back to his shuttering black body, his blood was pooling outside his back brain and his body parts were horribly twisted.
He was still breathing when rural metro got there (quick) and one of the men pounded on his chest but, too soon, they were covering him with a blue blanket.
Last night I watched Catherine Denieve in a late '60's French film quote from William Faulkner about living life fast and to the fullest, but the next day (today) I could see the grim ripper sending the other suv around the corner...like a malicous  surprise. Like a lesson for me. YES don't compromise. YES do it all. but don't think you (I) can beat the odds.
I'll buy the local paper tomorrow and learn what was for the young man until he crossed the double yellow line.
